The need for change

The Society will celebrate its 80th birthday in 2026.
Over this time, Charity law in England and Wales has changed, charity governance principles have changed, society has changed and so has the Society itself.

The Society's governing documents (its Articles of Association) have been updated from time to time to reflect some of these developments, but there are still some gaps and also some inconsistencies, caused by multiple minor amendments which were not correctly linked to each other.

The ultimate aim of the governance changes proposed is to celebrate and maintain what is best about the Society - its focus on promoting and improving the science of medicine, and its heritage, while enabling it to run smoothly and properly.
